The current practice and identities of teacher educators in a time of change

The European Commission (2013, p. 8) defines teacher educators as ‘all those who actively facilitate the (formal) learning of student teachers and teachers’. This definition positions the work of teacher educators as active and deliberate, with an acknowledgement that developmental interactions can be informal. It also widens the scope of teacher education work beyond university education faculties, which until recently comprised the predominant model of teacher education, both in research and through practice. Initial teacher training (ITT, sometimes referred to as initial teacher education or ITE) is currently in a state of flux, precipitated by the government white paper ‘The importance of teaching’ (DfE, 2010), through which the coalition government shifted the focus from teacher education in the university sector to the potential for employment-
