Children seeking sanctuary and the welcoming teacher: learning a new language in a new place.

In this webinar, Dr Julie Wharton, from the University of Winchester, will be reflecting on best practice for teaching English children and young people who are refugees and asylum seekers. Drawing on her doctoral research, Julie will explore practical examples of how you might ensure children and young people are supported to learn a new language on arrival in educational settings in the United Kingdom and Crown Dependencies. In this webinar, Julie will be reflecting on best practice for teaching children and young people with EAL who are refugees and asylum seekers.

Speaker Bios

Julie was awarded her PhD in February 2023. Entitled Children seeking sanctuary and the welcoming teacher: inclusive relationships and Martin Buber’s philosophy of dialogue, her thesis explores the ways in which teachers might welcome and include children who have been forced to migrate in their classrooms.

Julie was awarded an MA in Special Educational Needs in 2003. She is the programme leader for the National Award for Special Educational Needs Coordination (NASENCo). Julie joined the University in 2014, having spent seven years working as an SEND Inspector and Virtual Headteacher in a Local Authority. Prior to this she was an Advanced Skills Teacher for Special Educational Needs.
