Behaviour Management: Using the five step appeal

One of the biggest causes of stress for teachers is behaviour management (Education Endowment Foundation, 2019). This stress can be escalated when you use every behaviour management strategy under the sun, only to find it unsuccessful. The frustration of why it did not work can bother a teacher for a long period of time, and while reflection is healthy and encouraged in the profession, reflection on our behaviour management is often overlooked (Rogers, 2015). Munn et al. (2009), in their research paper for the Scottish government, compiled a list of low-level and serious behaviours, stating that verbal abuse/violence was experienced by teachers and support staff at least once a week. This is, of course, not representative of all schools and teachers, and in my context this rarely happens. The question here might be: why does it happen in the first place?
